content is contained in the Handheld Edition programs?
The
Medical Letter Handheld Edition contains complete Medical Letter
archives beginning with 2001. All of the information from the print
edition, including dosage/cost tables, is displayed in the Handheld
Edition. Review articles (Drugs for Hypertension, Asthma, etc. and
the antimicrobial articles) are contained in the handheld edition of Treatment Guidelines.
The Treatment Guidelines Handheld Edition contains complete Treatment Guidelines
archives beginning with its inception in September 2002. All of the information from the print
edition, including dosage/cost tables, is displayed in the Treatment Guidelines Handheld
Edition.
What
operating system does the program work on?
The Handheld Editions are available only for the Palm OS, running
version 3.3 or higher.
How
much do the Handheld Edition programs cost?
The Medical Letter Handheld Edition costs
per year. The Treatment Guidelines Handheld Edition costs

How
can I order the Handheld Edition programs?

How
frequently are the Handheld Edition programs updated?
The Medical Letter Handheld Edition program is updated biweekly on the Monday following the release date of The Medical Letter print edition. The Treatment Guidelines Handheld Edition is updated monthly on the second Monday of each month usually about two weeks following the release date of the Treatment Guidelines print edition. Subscribers to the Handheld Edition programs will
be sent an email when updates are available. If you HotSync with a Windows desktop computer, updates will be installed automatically (when available) when you HotSync. For those who HotSync with a Macintosh desktop computer, the update must be manually downloaded from The Medical Letter or Treatment Guidelines Handheld Edition update page.
You will need your username and password to retrieve the update.
If you don't have a username and password, you may register for a username and password online. If you have forgotten your user name and password, you may use our lookup tool.
Will
updates occur via AutoUpdate?
AutoUpdate is available for Windows HotSync only. If you HotSync with a Windows desktop computer, updates will be installed automatically (when available) when you HotSync. For those who HotSync with a Macintosh desktop computer, the update will need to be manually downloaded from The Medical Letter or Treatment Guidelines Handheld Edition update page.
The Medical Letter will notify users by email when updates are available. Updates do not work on their own; the original program must be purchased first.
Can
I try out the Handheld Edition programs first before purchasing?

How
are these applications different from ePocrates or other similar drug
references?
ePocrates
is an electronic pharmacopoeia. The Medical Letter Handheld Edition
is based on the print edition of The Medical Letter (for
articles published from 2001 forward). The Treatment Guidelines Handheld Edition
is based on the print edition of Treatment Guidelines from inception in 2002 forward. Both programs contains The Medical Letter's unique prescribing recommendations and cost comparisons, not available in any other drug reference.
How
much memory do the Handheld Editions require?
The Medical Letter Handheld Edition has a
minimum requirement of 2800K (2.8 MB) of free memory for the current
release. The Treatment Guidelines Handheld Edition minimum requirements are 4MB built-in memory and 900KB free memory for the current release. Articles are added each time the programs are updated, increasing the size of the applications. The programs do, however, have the capacity to delete
articles.
Can the Handheld Edition programs run from an expansion card?
The
Handheld Editions offers LIMITED support for expansion
cards. Typically, one places an application on the expansion card
to conserve main memory. The tradeoff in doing so is that the handheld
has to move data from the expansion card to main memory for the
application to run. This results in a slow launch. The programs also requires
a sufficient amount of main memory to import necessary data from
the card. A general rule of thumb is that if there is not enough
memory to install to main memory, then running off the expansion
card will not work. The Handheld Edition expansion card use is
NOT compatible with the independent application "Launcher X" if you are running Palm OS 5. There may be incompatibilities with other independent applications.
Do the programs contain color?
Yes,
but there is no requirement for a color screen.
Can
articles be deleted from the application?
Yes.
When articles are deleted, however, the index terms are also deleted,
so a search performed by the user will no longer be able to identify

What is my username and password for?
You do not need your username and password to download the Handheld Edition applications for the first time. You only need your registration number that is assigned to you when you purchase the products. You will need your username and password to retrieve the
updates when they are released. If you don't have a username and password,
you may register for a username and password online. If you have forgotten your user name and password, you
may use our lookup tool.
I
didn't receive a username and password when I purchased the Handheld
Edition. What now?
If you have purchased the Handheld Edition, you may register for
a username and password online. The email notifying you about the first update will also contain a URL for registering.
Are User's Guides available for viewing/downloading?
Yes, Medical Letter and Treatment Guidelines Handheld Edition User's Guides are available.
My registration code will not unlock the handheld edition program. What can I do?
The registration code you received is based on the HotSync name provided at time of purchase. If the registration code does not unlock the program, please verify the HotSync name of your handheld device. This can be done by tapping the HotSync icon on your handheld's main screen, then looking at the upper right corner of the handheld screen. E-mail the correct HotSync name to techsupport@medicalletter.org and another registration code will be generated to unlock your program.
My handheld program is not updating. What can I do?
If you HotSync with a Windows computer, please verify that your login has been entered correctly into your handheld program. This can be done by opening the program on your handheld device, tapping "Medical Letter" at the top of the handheld screen, then tapping Options > Preferences. Your login must be typed exactly as you registered. To verify your login, please use our lookup tool. If you have not registered to access the updates, please register for a username and password.
